DISCORD HACK STATEMENT
As many of you are aware of, our discord was hijacked on April 10th, 2023. With the swift prompts and actions by many of our Pirate community, the team was able to regain control quickly.
Here is a summary of events:
· Kaks’ “discord session” was hijacked. We believe that Kaks' session got hijacked when he was tried to join a new discord server. That server had a malicious verification system that stole his session cookie.
· Once a discord session is hijacked, personal security measures such as 2FA are bypassed and the perpetrator gained access to Kaks’ ID and all privileges associated with his accounts.
· The hijacker immediately posted links to a scam giveaway on our Pirate discord.
· Efforts by our discord community members to alert others to the spam links got their posts deleted and banned from the server.
· The perpetrator further removed Admin, Moderator, First Mate roles from all users and banned a large number of members.
· The #captains-chat channel was deleted to delay emergency communication within the team, and all channels were changed to read-only.
· A webhook was created in the #Announcement channel and linked to an external bot to automate posting spam links.
· A second bot was also installed that invited hundreds of bot users to react with spam posts. A moderator bot that was previously installed by SHossain attempted to intercept and kicked those bot accounts, but the hijacker banned the moderator bot when he found out.
· Approximately 6000 discord members were pruned during this attack.
· Thanks to our loyal community members who pinged each other quickly about this incident and a solution was quickly found.
· The attack was stopped when Captain Draeth was able to ban Kaks’ account.
· Notably, SHossain found an account that only joined the Pirate discord half an hour before the mayhem and had an Admin role. This account was quickly banned.
· Together with the help of ComputerGenie, Luna and many others from the team, SHossain has started fixing things that were broken.
We are currently taking a deeper look into how this attack started and we have contacted discord to further understand the mechanics of a “discord session hijack”.
The Pirate team wishes to express our sincere appreciation of the numerous Pirate community members who stood up to fight during this attack.
We are all still here and continuing to sail our arrrmada of privacy.
